Employee Benefits Underwriter/Analyst

The Murray Group, Inc Boise Office, is growing and seeking an exceptional individual with proven discipline, and commitment to join our team as Employee Benefits Underwriter / Analyst. Our clients are small to large employers and we offer them cost-effective benefit packages for their employees and dependents, that include medical, dental, vision, life, disability, HSA’s, FSA’s, STD, LTD, and more.

The Employee Benefit Underwriter / Analyst’s primary responsibility is to analyze information to create financial deliverables for current and prospective Murray Group clients, particularly for large group fully-insured clients as well as those with self-funded benefit programs.

Essential Duties And Functions

Responsible for the financial analytics for clients that are over 100 lives, as well as those that are self-funded.
Prepare analyses in accordance with client service calendar financial meetings (e.g. post renewal, mid-year review, pre-renewal, and renewal). Analyses may include but are not limited to:

  • Market review analysis
  • Renewal rate and funding projections and modeling
  • Analysis of claims utilization
  • Rate and contribution analysis
  • Benchmarking
  • Financial funding analysis (e.g. fully insured vs self-funded)
  • IBNR and claims lag analysis
  • Multi-year analysis to develop alternative strategies, plan modeling and cost reduction opportunities
  • Technical analysis of group insurance contracts and financial arrangements

Review and validate carrier renewal rating illustrations. Identify and articulate trends and relationship of experience to renewal rating. Suggest renewal activities based on findings from experience data.

Create client and prospect facing Executive Summaries that provide observations, conclusions, and recommendations
Act as a resource for Benefit Producers and Account Executives to develop strategic plans and solutions for clients and prospects
Collaborate with Service Team members to ensure strategic objectives are clearly articulated and proactive solutions are implemented
Have client and prospect facing contact pertaining to financial deliverables. Will attend client and prospect meetings
Develop and maintain excellent carrier relationships

Assist with team development as directed by manager, including but not limited to:

  • Development of team standards and processes
  • Maintaining analytical skill set and knowledge to act as a resource for the team
  • Participate in the peer review process, primarily as a reviewer of other underwriter / analysts’ work
  • Other miscellaneous duties as assigned

Required Skills


  • 2+ years’ experience in Employee Benefits or Medical Underwriting
  • Experience analyzing an employer to determine self-funded versus fully insured
  • Active Idaho Life & Health License (or willing to obtain one within 3 months of hire)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment independently and with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Advanced problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to carry out complex tasks with many concrete and abstract variables
  • Set priorities and manage workflow to ensure efficient, timely and accurate deliverables
  • Ability to manage and negotiate multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Maintain cordial and effective relationships with clients, coworkers, carriers, vendors, and other business contacts
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Keep informed regarding industry information, new product information, legislation, coverage, and technology to continuously improve knowledge and performance
  • Interact with others effectively by utilizing good communication skills, cooperating purposely, and providing information and guidance, as needed, to achieve business goals of the company
  • Strong functional knowledge of MS Office products to include Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, particularly in creating, formatting, and evaluating formulas and working with templates
  • Qualities must include accountable, go-getter, adaptable, organized
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s Degree Preferred
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time.
